Finding happy is only possible if you stay alive…
I know right? Common sense. BUT… in the blogging and direct sales industries there is a growing trend that drives me nuts, seriously, makes me anxious and not in a good way.
Videoing or “going live” while driving.
What is this about?
I put up a couple posts about this on my personal fb page and another on a group page and I got some interesting feedback and was able to think it through a little more.
Interesting comments that were in the realm of yeah but, were things like:
“but it’s no different than having a conversation with a passenger.”
“but that is the time I can really think.”
“driving is when I get my best ideas.”
and my favorite
“but the lighting is so good”
Ok, before you judge these people not all of those comments were made in defense of the action but more like “but I could see why”, kinds of things.
And there are some really smart people who are doing this. It isn’t as if they are a few cards shy of a deck or anything.
My theory: we are obsessed with multi-tasking. Too much to do, too little time kind of thinkers.
Plus, we get comfortable doing something over and over – like driving and we forget that we are sitting behind 2000 pounds of bone-crushing, metal.
But here’s the question you have to ask yourself.
“Is the message I’m giving to people, to help them improve their lives, worth either
a: dying for
b: killing someone for?
Because if you take your eyes off the road and someone in front of you stops suddenly because they took their eyes off the road for a split second
that is exactly what could happen…
IN A SPLIT SECOND!
Respect the road, the car, and be aware that not every does so that means you have to be that much more alert while you are driving. You have to look out for yourself AND for others.
I know, getting kinda preachy now.
But really, this trend is growing. We see it everywhere.
And it’s not like haveing a conversation, because when I talk to people in my car I don’t feel like I need to look at them every few seconds. But if you watch some of those videos you will see the amount of time they spend looking at the camera.
As for being a good time to think ~ awesome, keep a notepad or your phone handy for when those thoughts come and then pull over to write or video. Same with the lighting.
I get it, if I ever get the courage to do the “live” thing or video I will be in my car, mostly because in my world I have two places that I can go and lock the door and hid for a moment to get something like this done. My car and my bathroom. It will be in the car, and probably somewhere away from my house. But my car will be parked.
Because no matter how AWESOME my message is, or how valuable my product is, or how many people I think might really NEED to hear about this…
it’s totally not worth dying for or killing someone for.
And if you are a leader in any industry or in direct sales or your office and you are doing this just think about what you are teaching your people, your friends. Don’t video while driving… put it in park and the interesting thing is that it will get your message to more people because one of the most said comments I had when I posted this was
“I won’t even continue watching it if they are driving.”
Be happy, stay safe.
