What do you BELIEVE in?

What do you Believe in?

What do you believe in?

Amazing what a tiny little word does to a question isn’t it? I could have simply asked what you believe. But that tiny little two letter word “in” totally changes how one may answer the question. The tiny two-letter word creates an entirely different meaning to the question. I don’t know why that fascinated me so much, except maybe because each one of us is like that tiny word, we can make a big difference.  At any rate… here we go.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,                                           I do believe in ONE God.
the Father almighty,                                            that he is all powerful and the Father to us all
maker of heaven and earth,                                 and that he made all things, everything, and
of all things visible and invisible.                          has a plan for it all.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,                        The second part of the Trinity, the son.
the Only Begotten Son of God,                            Begotten, brought about, by God himself.
born of the Father before all ages.                       Here, long before he was born as man.
God from God, Light from Light,                          Our light in the darkness, true light.
true God from true God,                                       Just as holy and important as God the Father
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;    consubstantial – of one substance
through him all things were made.                      Part of the creator, not just a bystander.
For us men and for our salvation                          For ALL humankind, for us, so we may live.
he came down from heaven,                                 Knowing what was to come, did it anyway.
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,    as a human, to be truly WITH us.
and became man.                                                   to show us, by example, how to BE.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,  For ME, and YOU… crucified.
he suffered death and was buried,                         suffered ON PURPOSE, for us.
and rose again on the third day                            Triumph, powerful, he rose.
in accordance with the Scriptures.                          As we had been told for all time before
He ascended into heaven                                        leaving us, but not really leaving us – legacy
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.   to watch over us, to guide us, to advocate for us
He will come again in glory                              a glory like nothing we have ever known.
to judge the living and the dead                       Am I ready for this judgment? Can I pass?
and his kingdom will have no end.               No more death, no more pain, only love and light.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,    Third person of the Trinity, three in one
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,        one yet separate, more grace, more strength
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,   for all that the Trinity give us
who has spoken through the prophets.   each with lessons and examples and  words to live by

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.  one, universal church living FOR God
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins   baptism, to start clean, free from sin
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead  and for the judgment, and to meet God
and the life of the world to come. Amen.  the perfect life, the one we were meant for.

That is what I believe in.

That is my core, the very center of what I believe in. Obviously, the red indicates what goes through my head as we say the creed. That does not mean it is everything the church teaches, because I am not infallible… but if we don’t THINK about the words we say, then do we really believe?

I believe that I am a sinner… but I work hard to learn, and to change and to be worthy of all that has been given to me, done for me, sacrificed for me. And I pray that my efforts are enough, because God says I am enough, but he demands faithfulness, and effort to follow his laws, sorrow, and repentance for when we fail, and to work harder.

Even though “in” is a tiny word it makes a big difference. One person is tiny in the whole scheme of things, but what a difference we can make as we follow God’s leading. Blessings to you!
